What kind of game is Do Not Buy This Game, really?
It is a story-rich comedy walking simulator about making games, and the creator-player relationship. Expect a lot of narration, choice-driven moments, puzzles, and plenty of fourth-wall breaking.
What games is it for fans of?
If you like The Stanley Parable, The Beginner's Guide, There Is No Game, Superliminal, Portal, Undertale, or other strange narrative indies that are funny on the surface and a little dangerous underneath, you are probably in the right neighborhood.
Is there a playable demo?
Yes! There is a standalone playable demo on Steam, and I'd love for you to check it out! It doesn't spoil anything from the experience since it was built specifically to be a prologue to the game, but still give the same vibes as the full game does.
When is it coming out? Where is it comiong out??
The current plan is to release first on PC through Steam as soon as possible. There is no locked release date to announce yet, because guessing and then missing it would be annoying for everyone involved - but it's getting closer by the day! In the meantime, wishlisting and joining the newsletter will ensure you'll get updated on both the release date and platforms.
How long is the full game supposed to be?
The goal is a short, focused narrative game you can actually finish and remember. I don't want to pad things out with useless empty hallways. As for an exact number... I don't know yet! But I guess most people will go through it in around 3-4 hours.
Do choices actually matter, or is that just something games say?
Yes, the choices matter. They affect tone, conversations, and actual entire gameplay sections. It's not that the game is a giant branching spreadsheet where every decision creates an entirely new game, but your relationship with the narrator and your path through the experience are meant to feel personal.
Is it funny-funny, or funny-then-suddenly-existential?
Umm... Both? It starts with comedy, self-awareness, and a creator who clearly has a lot to say. Under that, there is a more personal story about creative pressure, expectation, and why anyone keeps making things when it would be much easier to lie down for a while.
Do I need to be a game developer to get it?
Not at all. If you have ever cared about a creative project, overthought a decision, second-guessed yourself, or had a strange relationship with the things you love, you will probably find something to grab onto. Being a developer just means you may wince a little earlier.
Will it support controllers and Steam Deck?
Controller support is part of the plan, and Steam Deck compatibility is something I'm aiming as well! That said, support details will only be listed publicly once they are properly tested instead of being held together by optimism.
Can I stream it, record it, or make videos about it?
Absolutely. This is the kind of game that is fun to react to, talk over and argue about.
Will there be accessibility options?
Yes. There are already quite a bit of accessibility options (Subtitles options / Key ribindings / etc) implemented in the game, and I indend to add even more. If you have any specific requests / questions, please reach out at contact@kingbladegames.com so I can make sure to accomudate for it.
What languages are supported?
The demo got translated to Simplified Chinese, Russian, French, Spanish - Spain, Turkish, Italian, Portuguese - Brazil, Japanese, Polish, and Traditional Chinese. I'm working with the same group to help translate the full game as well, but nothing is set in stone for it yet.
What is the best way I can support the game?
The best way is to wishlist it on Steam. After that, telling friends, sharing the trailer or demo, talking about it online, and asking your favorite content creators to check it out can all help more than people think.
I still have a question.
That's why I'm here. Feel free to reach out to contact@kingbladegames.com and ask away. Press, creators, curious players, and people with suspiciously specific questions are all welcome.
